Our very first experience of Bulgaria was in Summer 2003. We booked a weeks holiday in Sunny Beach after trawling through Teletext on the TV and selecting an ‘accommodation allocated on arrival’ deal – bed & breakfast basis. To be honest it didn’t start off very well! We were put in a very grotty hotel to the south of the resort. It was obvious that the hotel was due for renovation and updating (Hotel Pomorie) and, as it was coming to the end of the season, they were just squeezing in a few more weeks before closing up. The area we were in (Sunny Beach is pretty vast) seemed fine but the hotel was very disappointing to say the least.
Anyway, it all ended well. We complained to the Rep at the hotel and luckily he moved us to a more central position to the lovely Globus Hotel. Brilliant position, excellent spacious room – sadly not at the front of the hotel so we weren’t able to enjoy a sea view but it didn’t matter – the view from the rear was pretty interesting anyway.
So – a good taste of the country. “Yes”, we said, “we’ll come again” …
